I hold a BSc in Biological Sciences from Edinburgh Napier University though currently in my final year, I am turning that into a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science.
My big inspiration to start tutoring in the first place was my maths teacher taking five minutes after class one day to explain something in a slightly different way that I hadn't understood after two hours of lessons. I learned more than trigonometry that day, I learned to appreciate that sometimes you just need a slightly different way of looking at something to understand it so I employ that sort of method with my students, shifting my perspective and explanation until I land on one that this specific student likes.
So far I have had a wonderfully varied experience with students, some want a gossip while they work, some are purely focused on the work and it's hard to coax any future plans or extra-curricular interests out of them. Each new student's style teaches me something new and I love that because while I'm here as a tutor, I never want to stop learning.
I tutor maths and sciences to (I)GCSE level, I believe there is such beauty in those subjects that I try to open all my students' minds to. In my sessions, I can take almost any role, from laying everything out as if it's brand new information to being a study buddy to motivate. Regardless of the type of help needed from me, I see the student-tutor relationship as a team with the common goal of boosting the student's understanding so my priority is to develop a level of trust and a safe space to ask all the questions, knowing I will never say "I just explained that, weren't you listening?"
Outside of academia, I am a big fan of video and tabletop games, music, and mountain biking. Having grown up on classic rock and a bit of metal, I tend not to be very familiar with what's in the charts but the odd tune slips through into my life, and playing the bagpipes unfortunately doesn't make my taste any more mainstream.
