Lauralei: West Chicago tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a homeschooling mother of 3 with over 20 years of experience working with children in various settings. I am a graduate of Western Governors University where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education in 2015. While doing my student teaching, I was placed in two settings. My first was in a 1st grade elementary school setting and my second was a middle school special education setting.
I've worked as a camp counselor, an after school care counselor, a preschool teacher, an elementary and middle school teacher for a small home-school co-op, as a tutor for Sylvan Learning Center and as a tutor teaching English to students in China. Each stepping stone in my teaching journey has prepared me for the next. Every experience has given me new ideas and tools to work with.
I am able to tutor students in Elementary and Middle School Language Arts, Math and Social Studies.
My favorite subject to teach is Language Arts. One of my greatest delights is using high quality literature to teach reading skills such as phonics, blending, decoding, fluency, composition, handwriting, spelling and grammar.
My strengths are my ability to assess student understanding and adapt my teaching methods to accommodate the learner. Additionally, As a homeschooling mother of 3, I have spent over 10 years researching a variety of educational resources in order to educate my own children. That being the case, there will be no limit to the variety of materials that are at my disposal for helping your child learn. Each week, it is my sole responsibility to assess my own children's learning and then work to craft a very specific learning plan for each of them. This is something that I have grown to be an expert in. Given time with your child, I am confident I can deliver the same high quality learning plan.
Why do I do what I do?
I love to help students grow and learn to discover new things. I believe as educators it is our job to help students discover their own unique contributions to the world. We do this not by filling their heads with information but with beautiful ideas and showing them how to connect ideas ultimately leading to a well rounded person. No two learners are the same and as an educator it is my job to honor these differences and provide good seed for the soil and freshwater for its growth. This is a process that takes a lifetime. Learning never stops.

When I am not teaching my own children at home or tutoring other students, I enjoy taking care of my animals and working in my yard and listening to music. I also enjoy dance aerobics and Pilates and helping out in my community.
