In obtaining my master's degree in chemistry at Wayne State, I loved teaching the quiz sections of the class.
I would give a mini lecture on the topic then give a quiz based on this topic. I love enthusiastically sharing my knowledge of the subject and watching for the light bulb to appear over the student's head when the concept was understood. I continued this by teaching at the community college level for the past 14+ years.
My philosophy for teaching or tutoring is to meet the student where they are. It is my job is to figure out what the student needs. I do this by always asking questions about the student's background in the subject and what the student believes is the stumbling block. With this knowledge, the student and I develop a game plan for success.
In teaching a concept, it will eventually happen that a student will not understand the given explanation.
I feel that my strength, in having taught for many years, is being able to find a way to explain concepts in a different way, through examples, diagrams, and models.
I also share some of my background with the student in that I needed a physics tutor when I was an undergrad. I feel it is important to be relatable, to show that just because I am a tutor doesn't mean I am a genius or understood things first time through.
Lastly, learning should be fun. I have a variety of videos that I share with the students to put a humorous spin on the subject.
Outside of tutoring, I have been catching up on movies and shows that I have missed. I finally caught up on the Marvel universe and am binging my way through all the iterations of Star Trek series. I will enjoy going back to see live music, in clubs and concerts.
In addition to being a chemistry tutor and teacher, I am also a mom with three sons on the Autism spectrum. I have learned, through trial and error, what techniques to employ when helping them learn. It is a challenging joy to teach these students because they see things differently than neurotypical students.
