Austen Rhyce: Alexandria tutor
Certified Tutor
Why do I want to be a tutor? Because I am a student myself!
In the past I've studied Community Development and Applied Economics at the University of Vermont and have taken a number of math/science courses at Normandale Community College. I have a certificate of Permaculture Design and currently, I have recently received a certificate of Data Visualization & Analytics and am soon to receive my certificate of Full-Stack Web Development from the University of Minnesota.
I've had the privilege of several wonderful teachers/mentors throughout my education journey and it is in gratitude to them that I'm here to pay it forward as we move towards enriching our lives with learning.
Past tutoring experience includes a semester in a teaching assistant role for a rigorous economics course at the University of Vermont. I also have experience working for tutoring agencies for grades 6-12 in Spanish, economics, and math.
I'm available for tutoring Spanish and math but I'm most excited about tutoring coding as it is a field in which I'm developing myself professionally and teaching is a great way to reinforce one's own learning.
-----
My teaching/learning philosophy can be summarized as an emphasis on:
--Curiosity: A spirit of curiosity wonders priming the mind for learning.
--Clarity: Maintaining a clarity of goals/intentions/motivations builds the foundation for greater focus, commitment, and ultimately success.
--Context: A sense of purpose can be derived from understanding the big picture of a subject. Ask the "who?", "what?", "when?", "where?", "why?", and "how?" questions.
--Comprehension: Success occurs when a topic is thoroughly understood. Memorizing or cramming does not work well in the long-run.
