I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I started teaching when I was 12 or 13 years old, as an assistant teacher at my dance studio; at 14, I started volunteering as a TA in pre-Kinder and Kindergarten classes; and at 16, I started leading my own dance classes. My background as a dance teacher and school TA brought in me in contact with students as young as 2.5 to 11 years, and to say that I've been teaching for almost half of my life, would not be an understatement! I graduated from Fordham University in spring 2019, and while there I began to shift my focus from dance to fine arts and literature. Now, I tutor in several English-literature related subject, for a variety of age groups. I offer anything from essay-help to study tips to help with literacy. I have (clearly) always loved working with kids, and because I am passionate about my subjects, I genuinely enjoy the process of talking about them, engaging critically, and sharing information. My favorite subject to teach and help with is Victorian literature or 20th century American literature (since those are my favorite genres!) or helping them craft essays that are not only strong and persuasive but that they can enjoy writing. In younger students, I love teaching them to read - getting young children excited about books is one of the most fun parts of my job. Simply, I like to talk about books and words and I want to share the joy that those bring me, while empowering students to be active in their education, to get creative, take pride in their abilities and growth, and learn to love the process and the work!

Hobbies

I've always been one of those people who liked to be making things. I love drawing and painting, and I am also a photographer. I am always on the go! I love being outdoors -- rock climbing or bouldering, hiking, swimming. I practice yoga, and take dance class whenever I can. I am a huge bookworm -- I've always got 2 or 3 books going at a time. My favorite books change always, but my favorite genres are either 20th century American literature (my favorite authors are F. Scott Fitzgerald, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, and Truman Capote) or 18th and 19th century English and Irish literature (I love "Dracula," by Bram Stoker and anything by Jane Austen or the Brontes). I also have such a massive weakness for true crime, psychological thrillers, an mysteries.
