I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I currently teach all grades Kindergarten through 8th as a Resource teacher. I am passionate about helping the neediest students succeed. I believe that connectedness is the most important contributing factor to school success, and I am very good at building positive relationships with students and families. I deliver highly engaging lessons that relate to trends and topics my students are excited about. Most importantly, I know how to provide personalized learning opportunities to truly allow each student to learn at their own pace.

I have been tutoring since 2012 in all subjects K-high school. My strengths are reading phonics, reading comprehension, English Literature and Composition, and math through Algebra 1.

I love tutoring elementary or middle school math because I love filling in the gaps of knowledge and correcting the misconceptions that students have developed. Sometimes I find students have memorized a rule for solving a problem, but they don't know why the rule works and they don't know how to actually do the math to understand the problem. I use a concrete manipulatives and drawing pictorial approach to provide a foundation for the later abstract mathematical thinking.

I have always been a strong reader and writer, I was an English Literature major in college, and my master's is in Literacy Education and teaching reading. As far as reading phonics and decoding, I use a highly structured, multi-sensory approach in teaching reading. I am trained in Wilson Reading System which is based on the Orton Gillingham approach and helps kids grades 2-12 I personally have used Wilson with grades 2-8. I am also trained in and have tutored students using Lexia, Rode to the Code, Road to Reading, and Reading Recovery as other phonics based reading interventions. As far as reading comprehension, I am trained in using the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) with the younger elementary grades and Comprehension Toolkit for the upper elementary and middle school students.

I have tutored High School students in American Literature, English Composition, and Creative Writing Courses as well as in writing their college application essays. I ask open ended questions that encourage students to think critically about their work from a different perspective.

I love working with all students. I use a highly structured, yet also highly positive approach because my first and foremost goal is motivation. Most kids who are struggling know that they are struggling and as a result they have lost their love of learning. My goal is to show each student I work with that whatever they are struggling with can be fun and exciting once they find a way to connect to the material. I would love to motivate your child to succeed and develop a lifelong love of learning.
