Hello!
Currently, I am in working toward my Physics PhD at the University of Michigan. For over two years, I have worked as a Graduate Student Instructor, teaching incoming first-year students introductory mechanics. My research work involves studying quantum many-body systems, specifically the light-matter interactions in semiconductors.
My journey in tutoring began when a previous algebra II teacher asked me to mentor current students. Quickly, I found that I loved the ah-ha moments students experience when they finally understand a concept. Further, the impact education has on people's confidence and lives in general has led to renewed motivation to teach. So, I got involved as a mentor in the Pomona College physics department and then after arriving in Ann Arbor, I became a GSI and taught my own class sections for the first time.
Overall, I have found questions to be the best way to assess knowledge as well as gain it. I find it helpful to break down the larger complex problem into smaller simpler problems and then use questions to lead the student to the correct answer or efficient approach. This approach allows students to understand the material through their own discoveries, making the learning more engaging.
In high school and college, I competed as a long-distance runner in both track and cross country. In addition to running, I enjoy hiking, reading, and writing short stories.
