Hello,
My name is Dan Martin. I live in a small rural town that is quickly being overrun with new development. It is located about 70 miles west of Chicago in the flatland state of Illinois.
My Academic Overview
My education consists of an undergraduate in Computer Science from Northern Illinois University and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I also have a Masters of Information Systems from Roosevelt University. My certifications include a number of development and database-specific ones as well as a certification in Project Management (PMP) and a Six Sigma Green Belt. I have also worked on developing curriculum for on-line classes for Management, Operations and Project Management as well as IT-based coursework. I have been teaching various undergraduate and graduate business and information technology courses through a variety of universities for over 15 years.
My Work Experience
For the past 25 years I have held a variety of leadership positions in Operations and Information Technology management. These have ranged from a small 20 person firm to a Fortune 50 company and many in between. I have managed resources from many different countries and had had the pleasure to become acclimated to different cultures. I have worked in a number of industries including technical consulting, telecom, financial, software, healthcare, food service, education, transportation, and retail.
For the past few years, I have been a consultant leading large transformational programs at a major foods distributions company. My duties include the leading of numerous project teams to successfully implement their process enhancement and system improvement projects. I have about 200 resources reporting into me, so my days are filled to say the least! Previously I have been a Senior Program Manager for a large pharmacy retailer. I was responsible for the teams of resources that ran the mergers and acquisitions projects, where we worked to integrate new acquisitions into the standard processes that are running in the other 10,000+ stores across the country. This includes both technology integration, as well as business process re-engineering.
Several other initiatives that I have led involved the retail sector such as the Point of Sale systems, finance/forecasting/budgeting systems, and marketing analysis solutions on location placement. My background also includes being a Director for a major transportation company (school buses and Greyhound) where I was responsible for leading teams of Project Managers, Business Analysts, Operation Managers, and Design Analysts running various Business Operations and Information Technology initiatives. These projects range from technology solutions that offer efficiency savings at the over 700 bus depots to process re-engineering projects geared to optimize our workforce. I also have several years in the telecommunications industry (both wireless and landline) at AT&T. My team's duties ranged from analyzing the types of customer calls and interactions, to the usability of the applications on the desktops of over 60,000 Customer Service Representatives, and finally to enhance the POS technology systems. We also focused on the Interactive Voice Response system (IVR) that callers use to contact customer service (over 30 million a year) as well as the web platform. Finally, my responsibilities also included the building of the strategic roadmap and associated budget for the Operations area. I have also worked at for-profit educational institutions where my organization was responsible for the various technical functions on the campuses. Lastly, I have also worked at small boutique software firms building various solutions on multiple platforms ranging from mainframe to the web across a variety of industries.
Teaching
I enjoy teaching because I enjoy giving back to others what was given to me. I was taught by some great instructors who took me under their wings and taught me to be a lifelong learner. I like to instill that in others while teaching them the important topics we will be covering in this class.
I have been married for the past 23 years and have 2 children ages 16 and 13. Finally my son can drive so he can help with the shuttling of himself and his sister to their activities. Before it was non-non stop!
So that's me!
