Certified Tutor

From my academic endeavors in English fields to my professional experience in the publishing industry, I believe that my literary background has helped me develop the skills necessary to help you succeed as both a writer and a test-taker. My main goal as your tutor is not only to help you develop your writing skills (for class, college essays, creative writing, etc), but also to equip you with strategies for tackling the tough verbal and critical reading topics like the ones that can be found on the SAT.

As a graduate of Cornell University in English and Psychology, I am very passionate about the written word. I was recently awarded honors (Magna Cum Laude) for the 50-page thesis I completed on advanced psychological and critical themes in the work of Arundhati Roy. I've also participated in two of the most competitive summer workshops in the country (the Iowa Young Writers' Studio, which has a one percent acceptance rate, and the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop) as well as several advanced creative writing courses at Cornell University (where I had the privilege of studying under the guidance of authors such as David Orr, the New York Times Poetry Critic). At Cornell I also held the office Managing Editor for two of the university's most prestigious undergraduate magazines. One of my favorite aspects of working with these publications was being able to work in one-on-one mentorship sessions with dozens of young authors to help them to develop their best possible writing. I hope to extend this mentorship to you, my prospective student, in your own writing/reading endeavors.

In line with this, my professional background to date is also suited to help you improve your writing and reading. After college I decided to follow this passion for the editorial process to my current internship at The Paris Review, where I write weekly columns for the website (1 million views monthly) and conduct interviews with some of today's most innovative artists. Prior to that I was a member of the Features team at Marie Claire Magazine, where I was responsible for pitching articles for articles that received 5 million views monthly. Both of these roles have exercised my ability to think critically about creative work as well as to formulate precise and constructive critiques of written work. During our sessions I will work hard to pass these skills along to you, my student.

In short, if you are a middle or high school student dedicated to bettering your writing (whether it's a college essay, a class assignment, or anything beyond), I will happily give it my all to make sure you achieve the best possible outcome.
