After teaching for 25 years, in both the public schools and home-school (I home-schooled seven kids), I look at teaching a little differently. For instance, ( I have a BA in Psychology) I took a 13 week course studying how the brain learns. This is a higher elective class that few Psychology majors, and no teachers elect to take.
There are five (5) pathways that your brain uses to connect objects and processes, in the real world, to words/ concepts/ ideas within the brain. Having a student use all paths leads to quicker and more efficient learning.
For twenty (20) years, I home-schooled my seven kids from first to the twelfth grade. So, I have a good idea of what each grade requires.
One more thing, I like word pictures. For instance, in video games, until you master a level, there's work and more work. But, beating a level, gives you a sense of pride. The harder the game, the "prouder" you feel.
School's a little like that. It has levels and it takes work. Once you learn the tricks, learning is easy. Then, just like in a game success brings pride.
With someone to guide you, both games and school are a lot easier.
Nothing is as addictive as success. Trust me.
