Madison: Blue Island tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a recent graduate of James Madison University with a major in biology and a minor in nonprofit studies. Currently, I am an after school science teacher in Alexandria.
Throughout my studies, I have always been fascinated by the connection between human actions and environmental sustainability. I launched my own conservation education program within the JMU Biology Department in order to bridge the gap of environmental conservation education in public schools throughout Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. The JMU Herpetology Outreach Program (JMU HOP) focused on the threats facing amphibian and reptile biodiversity by engaging K-12 students in conservation education.
This experience helped teach me science curriculum development based on Virginia State Standards, expanding my interest in teaching beyond informal science to classroom education. Because of this program, I now have 2+ years of teaching experience through teaching assistantships, student teaching, and private tutoring in life sciences and biology.
In addition to tutoring and teaching, I am a conservation research biologist. I spend summers in Costa Rica studying tropical ecosystems and present my research at conferences around the country.
Beyond science, I like to help students develop time management skills and effective study techniques in order to create healthy academic habits. All of my tutoring is centered around developing habits to help students succeed on their own and become responsible for their own learning.
