I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am currently a Junior, attending Peru State College where I have finished with my General Education courses, and am able to focus on my Psychology Major. I graduated from high school in 2016 and was second in my class. I was able to take duel-credit classes during high school, including English, Psychology and Math courses. By taking these dual-credit classes, I was able to get ahead on my college classes, so I can graduate early. While attending school, I am also working as a Living Learning Community Mentor on campus with Residence Life. I mentor freshman students who have not decided on a major yet. We get together to learn more about the different programs offered at Peru State College, and what the careers each major could be applied to. Mentoring students is so much fun, and I love getting to know them and helping them discover themselves. It reminds me of when I was in high school and would help students with their studies, as well as just be there if they needed to talk. This experience helped me to discover my passion for helping others, which is why I am a tutor, as well as why I am going into Psychology. I am hoping and planning to use my Psychology major, as well as my Counseling minor, to help those in need. I plan to become a therapist and someday working with disaster relief programs, like the American Red Cross, to help counsel those who go through traumatic natural disasters. I go on mission trips every summer, and they have really helped me realize my dream for helping those who need it.
Tutoring is one of those ways I can help people. I helped other students with math all the time in high school. I was even able to have a work-study in school where I was an aid during Geometry; I even taught a couple of the lessons with our teachers guidance. At the time, I was planning to be a Math teacher. I took every math class I could get my hands on, including Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and even dual-credit Calculus and Statistics. However, I did end up deciding that being a math teacher just was not the right fit. I did love working with other students, and the math was not difficult, but I absolutely fell in love with my Psychology classes and decided that tutoring could still be a way to incorporate both into my life. School is tough enough without having to deal with the added pressures of needing help in a difficult course, and I am hoping that by helping a student better understand a course they are taking, I can make their life a bit easier.
