Certified Tutor

During my time as an undergraduate, I had several opportunities to teach my peers, and learned how rewarding being a tutor could be.
My first experience as a teaching assistant in Biology 101 allowed me to cultivate some of my basic skills, as I worked with students 1 on 1 and in groups to help them nail down fundamental concepts of Biology. My teaching style is based on leading-by-example, and I actively encourage my students to show how they know something, rather than simply repeat knowledge from memory. My focus is on understanding, rather than memorizing - and I believe the best way to prove you know something is to teach somebody else!
I have a lot of experience teaching others about the process of science and scientific inquiry. I also served as a TA for a research class called "Molecular Biology Through Discovery" in which students were made to become the world's foremost experts in a very small realm of molecular biology, through meticulous research of specific topics. The class culminated in each student creating a research proposal - an experiment that could be carried out to answer a question for their chosen topic. During this class, I served to challenge students' hypotheses, and undermine their scientific thought process. I worked with them to improve their experiment, to ensure it could truly answer the question they were trying to solve! In summary, I have experience as a tutor for classes focused on both mastery of material, and the process and rigor of science!
