Certified Tutor
I first became interested in tutoring during my experience as a zoo camp instructor. This position made me realize how much I enjoyed teaching children about animals and conservation. I worked with Pre-School age groups as well as 8 and 9 year old groups. Watching the children get excited and learn about the earth was a very rewarding experience.
Although I pursued a career more focused on animal care, I still interacted with children on a regular basis. I have conducted animal encounters, and engaged the general public for several years. I have to be able to answer most of the questions they throw at me, so I am accustomed to answering questions on the spot and learning new information myself.
As much as I have loved my animal care career, I am at the point in my life where I would like to pursue other avenues, and I feel tutoring is a great transition.
As a tutor, I will engage students with lively interaction, several visual aids, and plenty of time for questions at the end of the session. In regard to my method, I will first explain a concept to a student, and use a couple of examples. I will then have the student explain the concept back to me and use their own example. This way I am positive they are understanding the core concepts.
In addition to lively interaction, I will also brush up on the materials the student is learning, and make sure I am on the same page as the teachers who are teaching the subject. That way, the student will be getting a clear line of communication. It is of the utmost importance that my student feels prepared and confident at the conclusion of our tutoring sessions.
