I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Get exposure to different environments; start going to places on your own, interact with others outside of your friend group, and get excited when you challenge yourself to get to the next level!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Practice Practice Practice.....and you will get better! 100%.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First I would introduce myself and tell them a little bit about myself. Then I would ask a few questions about their interests and favorite subjects to study. I would also want to get a grasp on what level the student is at in the particular course that I will be assisting with. Then we would begin! :)

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encouragement is so important at any age! Staying positive and always being up for challenges that may be tricky in the moment but are far more rewarding in the end. I also like to teach certain problems based on the interests of the students that I work with.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I try to go about teaching mathematical concepts with different approaches. If a student doesn't understand the concept logically, I will teach it by example. Additionally, some students like the technical approach while others are much more visual. I, myself, am most certainly a visual learner.
