I first realized that I enjoyed tutoring in high school when I would help my friends with their homework. It was then that I decided to have a more formal relationship with tutoring and began working with a program in my school to help not only my friends but also younger students.
In college I majored in math and wanted to continue to share my love of math with students who didn't feel the same passion for it. I worked with another tutoring program in college and worked with 9th grade students tutoring mostly in Algebra 1. Forming a relationship with these students was very fulfilling and I began interning for those tutoring programs so I could do the behind the scenes work.
After college, I entered into a competitive teaching program called DC Teaching Fellows, where I got formal training into becoming a teacher. I spent the past 6 months as a lead teacher for an 11th grade Algebra II class. I lead tutoring with a group called RISE DC every Wednesday during lunch and was able to get many of my students passing through this one-on-one work. I taught almost 200 students, many of whom had IEPs and I found that overseeing that many students was simply too much for me, but I learned many new skills that can transfer better to working with one-on-one with students.
I am very excited to get started with Varsity Tutors and working with new students!
