What is your teaching philosophy?

Utilize more than one learning approach. Utilize online services. Get feedback from the students themselves.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

After introductions, I would like to hear from the student: how do they feel about the courses they are taking? Do they know where they want to begin? Asking questions like these will help prioritize a learning plan.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Helping a student find and master effective learning strategies.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would demonstrate understanding with fairness, share stories of personal failures and success, acknowledge every accomplishment, and have a sense of humor.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find out the specific or core problems, and I would bring the stress level down by letting the student know difficult is not impossible through utilizing various learning strategies.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Assess where the challenge is for the student, and this could be letter/sound recognition, syllables or sight words. I would have us practice reading and asking guided questions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like listening to the student, scaffolding, repetition, simplifying terms, using online resources, focusing on and diffusing learning times, using assessments, and giving timely feedback.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would validate that topics can seem challenging, but I would express belief they can meet the challenge. I would also share a personal anecdote, stay positive and encouraging, and be excited about the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would focus on the student's ability to discuss material, ask guided questions, give assessments, and work on the student's ability to self-correct.
