Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that of meeting students where they currently are in terms of what they already know and what they need to learn. I assess the student with their current level of understanding and work with the student on the material that is required to enhance their understanding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My first session with a student would entail becoming more acquainted with the student and asking the student what their educational needs and desires are. I would also assess the student in terms of listening, reading, and writing depending upon the necessities of the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can assist a student in becoming an independent learner with the provision of motivating and providing interesting assignments that are geared to the skills that the student requires in moving forward with their education.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would encourage the student to see the value of becoming more educated with interesting and intriguing assignments that relate to their personal lives.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would go back to the basics of the skill or concept and introduce the student more slowly, and then review what the student has learned.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would work on vocabulary lists with those students in terms of the reading content.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that the strategies that are most successful are becoming acquainted with the student and assessing the student's current knowledge base.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would assist a student in getting excited and engaged with a subject by encouraging the research of the item and what is entailed in the knowledge of it. There are many interesting ways of learning, such as visual, written, and computerized games on various subject content. The way in which the subject content can affect the student's life is varied for each individual, so I would attempt to see the areas of interest of the individual, and the family of origin, to create a sense of wanting to know something.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use the techniques of the individual student's preferred method of learning and how the student learns best in terms of visual, rational/written methods or conversation based learning. There are so many methods of testing for the review of student background knowledge and the current state of what the student knows. I prefer to give an oral pre-test and oral interview of the student to engage in conversation and to show me what they know. I prefer written tests as well to assess what the student needs to learn in terms of cognition and reading and writing skills.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence in a subject by showing the student that they already know so much and just have to organize their thinking about a subject to learn more. There are very simple explanations for new information that relate to what the student already knows. It entails the engagement of what a student knows to learn more complex higher order thinking about any subject content.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by interviewing the student as to their current level of knowledge and what it is that they require to achieve their goals. I like the idea of an oral interview as well as a written pre-test.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by evaluating the student's individual learning style that is best suited for them, as well as by using various materials and support online and in person.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I utilize various materials such as textbooks, written and pictorial assignments, readings, websites for research, and computer learning games depending upon the subject content and grade level.
