What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that I learn with you! My goal is to listen and help, allow you to ask questions freely, and guide you to your answers without handing them out to you. Learning should be fun and should be beneficial; it should be something that inspires you to follow your dreams. My plan is to help you discover your learning style and work with it to help you succeed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I ask them about themselves and ask them what they believe their strengths and weaknesses are. As we get into their work, I will ask them questions about what they understand. This way, I will be able to get a read on where they may need the most help.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by showing them techniques that they can take with them and use every day. I make sure that they learn skills that they can use on their own so that when they are alone they will be able to put those skills into practice and always improve on their own!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To keep students motivated, it is important to use positive language! Always saying you believe in them! Letting them know that they can do anything they put their minds to. Reminding them to set their goals in life and understand that these are just the early steps to reach their goals and make their dreams a reality.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When a student has a hard time learning a skill or concept, it is important to find out exactly what they are having trouble with in order to correctly and successfully assess their needs and help them to learn the skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

As we read each page, I'll stop and ask questions about what was just read. To make sure that, as the story develops, they are able to understand what is happening. For younger students, we will draw pictures and create timelines of main ideas and details to help them see how stories and concepts develop.
