When I was in middle school I needed multiple tutors for different subjects. And to be honest I was embarrassed about it. But I began to gain more confidence about it through the encouragement of my tutor. She was able to keep me motivated and gave me the confidence I needed to succeed. So when got into High School I decided to start tutoring and mentoring myself to give back to my community like so many people had did for me.
So now I tutor to help enrich my community and to help students gain the confidence and motivation they need to succeed in life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would try to learn about the student. I feel it is important to know how he/she likes to learn and to find out how to make things interesting for that individual student, knowing that everyone is different.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would help a student become independent by not only teaching but in return seeing if that student can teach me to demonstrate proficiency of lessons.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would give constant encouragement and motivation.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would continue to encourage them and repeat and go over the lesson as much as possible. I'd also give extra practice.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I break down the passage sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph. I also teach more about story elements like character, plot, and setting to help build with their comprehension.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
One of the most successful strategies when working with a student I found is, after teaching the lesson seeing if they can teach it back to me.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would show them the fun in it and try to get them to be as passionate as I am with the subject.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would model the lesson and expectation. I use worksheets, games, and extra practice.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would give constant encouragement and positive reinforcement.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by getting a progress report from their school. I would also find out goals that need to be met by their school, and I would find out the strengths of that student to be able to teach them better.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I find out and learn as much as I can about that student so I can tailor my lesson to them.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use reading selections/books, worksheets, and quizzes.
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to make a lesson as engaging and exciting as possible for the student.
