I personally have a great passion for the true process of student learning. I have taught both middle and high school science for the last four and a half years. During my time in schools I have developed my philosophy of valuing each child as an individual, as
well as part of a community. I aim to give children as many learning opportunities s as possible in order to engage, motivate and prepare them for future life. An appropriate, balanced, challenging and creative curriculum is essential in developing
children's skills, knowledge and understanding.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that in order to grow as a learner we must first find out where you as a learner are. Once your level of comprehension has been has been determined, I will create a detailed and systematic approach so that we as a team can accomplish all of your goals. I look forward to working with you.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to spend the first 5 minutes getting to know the student and building a relationship. After learning the student's background, my primary objective would be to determine my student's strengths and weaknesses as a learner as well as whatever content we will be covering. From there I would hope to start tutoring immediately.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe, in order to do this, you must help find students find relevance in the content as well as establish goals with specific time objectives so that students can see and feel growth.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It is extremely important for students to feel growth and to see that they are becoming more competent in their studies. This would be like students having individualized trackers.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Well I would plan on utilizing various different learning methods. If a student was not understanding the concepts fully, I would hope to find an activity or online lab which could help them further their understanding of the material.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

As a tutor, this is my job to help students. Because I am primarily helping students with science based concepts, I would find texts that fit their Lexile levels so that they can still complete the reading's but are not completing reading tasks that are above their level of comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I found that building a trusting relationship is key. Students must know that you care about their progress and success.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would like to find the student's personal interests, and then use those interests to hopefully tie into the content and increase relevancy. I have found if you can utilize real-life examples, students are much more likely to retain information.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

At the beginning of each section I would administer a brief pre-test, and then at the end of each lesson administer an exit ticket or some type of assessment to check for understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

You need to provide scaffolded lessons, which allow students to show their proficiency, and then continue to challenge students with rigorous questions.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs primarily through 2 ways. I first evaluate a student's needs via assessment, and then secondly simply by talking with the student and asking them how they feel about specific topics/content.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I try to alter my lessons depending on the student's strengths. For example, some students may be visual learners and need to see examples or simulations before they can fully master the material.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I utilize various resources online.
