How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would encourage the young reader to visualize themselves as a character and make the reading more interactive.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I talk to the student and ask them questions before we even start. I want to hear directly from them what the issue with the subject is before we dive in.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By introducing a sense of play infused with learning. And introducing new tactics every day.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would want to test the student a few times using different questions that arrive at the same answer to be sure the student can arrive at the answers on their own from several different ways.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By using verbal encouragement and repetition.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By simply asking them at the start, and learning to pick up on their non verbal cues.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Tools mainly associated with reading comprehension and literature.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Listen first. Every student learns in a different way. I like to have an open mind and learn their terms before imposing mine.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to start with a Q&A to figure out the student's issue with the subject before we dive in.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By implementing logic and critical thinking as well as repetition.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By infusing learning with a sense of fun and play.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

There are a variety of tactics one can use. It's very easy to recognize when a tactic isn't working. I like to move on to the next quickly if that's the case.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By figuring out what type of learning they respond to best. Kinesthetic, visual, or auditory learning can be learned.
