What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce myself, talk about strengths and weaknesses, and ask what the student wants out of the tutoring. After this, we can discuss test and quiz dates.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would try out various study strategies and work to improve the student's confidence.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Positive reinforcement is key!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to relate the subject to something they already understand and are interested in.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would go over various reading strategies, read for them when needed, and discuss what we could get out of the reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I've found several strategies that are successful, some of which are using flash cards, positive reinforcement, maintaining a positive attitude, and practicing patience.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would make a game out of it or bring physical aids.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Flashcards are a must!
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Through positive reinforcement and rewards.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By asking them what they perceive to be their weaknesses, and paying close attention to the student's learning style and studying capabilities.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By utilizing the strategies that they seem to benefit from the most.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I would bring paper, pens, flash cards, highlighters, a planner, a computer, and text books.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Every student learns in their own unique way. Tutoring will vary according to how the student benefits from the various teaching strategies I use, and I am a patient tutor who commonly uses positive reinforcement to boost confidence and overall interest the subject.
