I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

My whole life I've loved learning. No matter the subject, I've always had a voracious appetite for knowledge. Somewhere along the way I realized that the only thing I enjoy more than that is helping other people learn.

When tutoring, I like to take the approach of cutting through the details to hit the big concepts, to make the topic more personal and come alive. In my experience, Professors will always prefer a student understand concepts and have an interesting thesis than be able to regurgitate details they can look up. And if it's necessary to learn those details, they can be learned far easier once the key concepts are understood. It's always easier to learn the lyrics to a song you like. That's how I approach tutoring.

When I'm not tutoring I like to read, play golf, watch sports, and spend time with my dog. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.

What is your teaching philosophy?

The key to learning is to be able to relate to the material and find it interesting. We live in a world of Google and Wikipedia. Most Professors don't care if students can memorize a long list of details because they know we can find those easily. They want students to understand concepts and think critically. My goal is to help students do that. If facts and figures do need to be memorized, it's easier to do so when you can place them in context. If you can recall the story, you can recall the details. But if you don't understand any of it, you won't remember it, let alone be able to think critically about it. My goal is to make these things understandable and personal.
