What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I get to know the student. I find out what their stated goals are. We make plans and establish feedback.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I teach them how to study, think, and analyze work critically.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would show them that they can achieve in the work.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would give them mini-assessments with feedback.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would help to show them how to read critically.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I give students a pre-assessment. I also give them an assessment of their learning styles.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would find alternative, fun ways to teach the material.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would assess, reteach, and re-assess. I would assign outside work.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I show them they can achieve, and I help them keep a portfolio of that achievement.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I assess what they need to know within the context of their class.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I look at their learning style and proceed from there.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use computers, websites, hands-on lessons, books, etc.

All students can achieve.
