What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching = Learning

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find a way to feel comfortable with each other so that we can bond.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Challenging him/her.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Meet his/her needs and know his/her interests to apply them in the lesson.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain… explain and explain, until I find the correct teaching language (method) the student understands.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would work a lot with vocabulary, meaning, synonyms, antonyms, and provide a lot of examples of difficult words in different contexts. I would generally work with a lot of semantics concepts.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Understanding his/her needs. Placing myself in their position.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find that part of the subject they like, and celebrate them every time they do right to get them to feel comfortable with the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Repetition. Content review at the end of the lesson and at the beginning of the coming lesson.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Emphasizing on what they do right, rather than what they do wrong.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Testing, posing questions and directly asking them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Knowing those needs and tackling them upfront.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Pictures, dictionaries, physical objects and regular classroom material.
