What is your teaching philosophy?

My personal goal for my future classroom is to challenge students and watch them grow to their full potential. I want to take students at different levels and see them develop together for the betterment of each individual.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to get to know the student and what their strengths and weaknesses are. I would love to give an assessment to see where the student is on his/her grade level.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will find out which teaching style the student does well in, and I would use manipulatives to help the student understand what is being taught. I would have a goal for that student and would love the student to achieve that goal.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It is important to keep student engaged at all times and also have 1-3 minute brain breaks so they do not become mentally exhausted.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will teach it in mini steps. I will model the "I do, we do, you do strategy" a lot until the student understands.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will teach many reading strategies that will help the student comprehend better. I would also do a reading inventory on the student to find out what they like to read so that we could use that type of reading material to learn.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I do, we do, you do.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I praise the student and build their confidence level.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would end each session with an exit ticket to see if the student understands what is being taught.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By praising them for big and little things...doing a high five or raising the roof.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I do various assessments.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By getting to know their strengths and weaknesses and also their best learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

White boards and dry erase markers.
