I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I initially attended college for photography, then went on to receive a BA in Art History from Fordham University and finally an MA in Early Childhood Education from NYU. I have worked at three New York City public schools in Pre-K, K and 1st grade classrooms. And I have tutored 1st-4th grade. Through these academic and teaching pursuits, I have discovered that my true passion lies in providing creative and personal academic support. I struggled with academics in school because of a system unwilling to support diverse learning needs. I am determined to guide my students towards success by helping them hone in on their unique skill sets.

I also spent my entire senior year of college writing my undergraduate thesis. I went through an extensive research and essay editing process to finalize my thesis and feel my skills in this area will be useful to any college or graduate student.

Outside of tutoring, I am personally interested in pilates, piano, photography, and planning (and of course traveling on) at least two international trips a year!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would talk to the student about an accomplishment they are most proud of in school and a task they found to be most challenging. That will help me without asking outright what their strengths and weaknesses are in school.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

We will work on multiple strategies at approaching a subject. Trying on different hats allows us to become independent thinkers. One hat is going to fit best, and a student will recognize that, and I will help encourage that student to utilize their natural disposition towards specific learning styles.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by determining different goals- both personal and academic- and what it would mean to achieve those goals. Long term and short term goals provide motivation to keep going.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know a student on a personal level is an absolute must for me. When you discover a student's interests, passions, and hobbies, you can work those into relate and motivate a student to get through the tasks they find to be the most difficult to handle.
