What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that everyone deserves an equal opportunity at education, and that education is fun and should be presented that way. I also believe that there should be a bond between a teacher and student, and that they can learn from each other.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to get to know what my student is like outside of class, and to gauge their level so I can tutor accordingly.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By letting them struggle at times. This might sound counterintuitive, but ultimately my goal is to have my student be their #1 resource.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By reminding them that learning is journey and not a marathon.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Use different modalities of tutoring. For example, a student might be a visual learner, so I would use tools to help them understand a skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By being patient with them and letting them know it's OK to make mistakes. Once again, education is a journey and not a marathon.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

By getting to know them to establish a comfort level.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

To let them know that there are many real-world examples of things that they are studying.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

By letting them independently practice, and reviewing any essential content.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By precisely praising them on their achievements, whether they are big or small.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By gauging their basic skills in the content area, and asking them directly what they feel they need help in.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By actively listening to them and asking for any feedback on my tutoring style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

A whiteboard and dry-erase marker.
