What is your teaching philosophy?
A student-centered class is key to the success of the student and the teacher at the same time.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Listen to the student and understand what his/her needs are to be able to later create a class that will lead to his/her success.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Helping him/ her to create and develop study habits that will enable him to learn independently for years to come.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Encouraging him/ showing results/ checking in on him/ cheering him on.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Take the time to explain in different ways, give different exercises to practice, and reinforce the concept. Above all: be patient.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
By showing the students techniques that will help them to conceptualize the reading and will help them in their comprehension.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Listening is the first, as in order to really help the student, a teacher need to really listen and understand what the student needs.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Thinking outside the box, maybe showing him the use of the subject in everyday life, and showing him the importance of it or making it fun!
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Ask questions, do exercises with the student, do a fact check, and have the student teach me or explain the lesson to me.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Practice, encouragement and cheering him on to let him know he/she is doing great!
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Part of this is listening to his past experience and to what he wants, and part is evaluating the level he has in the subject and how he responds to participating in the topic at hand.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Every student is different. I never have the same material for one student. I do research and get the best material for him/her specifically.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
It depends on what the student needs, but materials can be anything from games, flashcards, books, or online resources to real-life props. For example: going to the supermarket is a great way to learn about fruits and vegetables.
