What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

First, get to know the student and help them discover their most effective way of learning. Then, tailor your lessons to match their needs.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

What I have found most effective is a lot of practice with the help of visual and hands on methods.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By encouraging them and complimenting them when they succeed. But, when you have to, use constructive criticism to help them battle problems.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

First, get to know their best way of learning, and then tailor your lessons to match that.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'd try to explain it the best I can, and if they still don't get it, then I'd try a different method which is altered to match their learning techniques.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Really understand the student's strengths and weaknesses. From that going forward, I'm helping them not only to become a better at the subject, but also at things like time management.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd get to know the student: likes, dislikes, and hobbies. I'd try to figure out the most effective strategy to excel.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Well, first find out what the best way they learn is, and then develop learning methods, e.g. doing a lot of practice questions and giving them some to work on when I'm not around.
