A great tutor encompasses many great qualities. This person has the interpersonal skills and qualities of a mentor while possessing the compassion, empathy, and patience of a parent. This person is able to work with students of all levels by being empathetic and being able to relate to them. A great tutor has the knowledge necessary to teach a student, but does not force the material and understands that the learning process is unique for each student.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in helping a student achieve their greatest learning because it boosts their self esteem. I believe that the learning process takes time, but it is so fulfilling and rewarding.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Catch up over personal interests briefly, then run through problems to assess their level of knowledge. Then we'd begin tutoring.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I'd teach them the broad concepts that they can use later on.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd encourage them to put their best work forward because they will be rewarded for it.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would run through other problems of an easier level. Once we understood the concept, then we'd run through that level of difficulty.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

We'd take it one word, then sentence, and then paragraph at a time.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I've found it's helpful to include what they love. Whether that's sports or getting to know each other on a personal level, it's important.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I'd try to look for ways to make it engaging.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I'd reference the concept later on and see if they retained it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would encourage them by referencing times when they were correct.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I'd listen more than I'd speak.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I'd really get to know the student during the first few sessions.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I'd use flashcards, diagrams, sample problems, and ways to make it more relatable in real life.
