Certified Tutor

I am a recent Biomedical Engineering graduate who is pursuing a Master's in Public Health at Virginia Commonwealth University. This career path has trained me to integrate math, science and the humanities together to form systems and programs to provide quality of life for all. I additionally have a passion for education, whether in creating educational programs or tutoring. My favorite subjects to tutor are math or science, however I am confident in most subjects at the High School Level including Latin. I work to stand in the shoes of the student to adopt their perspective to find new, unique ways to educate. Each of us has a unique learning style and learning a students' style is important in conveying any subject or concept.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I find ways to stand in students' shoes, in order to adopt their perspective and find unique ways to teach a variety of topics.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session provides me with a chance to meet and gauge a student's learning styles and personalities. Over time, this allows for personalized tutoring sessions, which can complement that particular student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

An independent learner has courage to explore topics they are unsure or weak in and also the curiosity to delve deeper in the subjects they love.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Complimenting a job well done, providing rewards when milestones are met, and treating education as a gift and reward are ways to keep students motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept initially, I change my strategy and try to implement multimedia tools, tactile tools or conversation to convey the topic.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading is a skill that takes practice, just like any other skill. I would suggest books or tools that the student is interested in to hook them on reading and the places it can take them to.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I try to boost the student's self-worth and confidence in the subject matter so they are not anxious or worried about progressing to harder subjects.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I find the new era of multimedia educational tools to be powerful in attracting students and keeping them excited and engaged. If a certain teaching style is not working, there are many more to try.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I like using checkpoints in which I'll ask clarifying or quiz-like questions to make sure the student is keeping up and not just going through the motions. True learning requires proper communication and connection between the teacher and student.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Connecting subjects to real-world examples or subjects the student is already confident in can show how the world is an interdisciplinary space where various skills and abilities are respected. Guiding a student to understanding their role, abilities and skills, assists in boosting their confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Initially, the needs are conveyed by a parent or the student themselves; however, once tutoring begins, I observe where they struggle and try to implement teaching style changes to compensate for their needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Using multimedia tools, tactile tools and communicating needs can help the teacher and student help each other.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I tend to use plain white paper with various colored pens and pencils, and multimedia tools to assist in the tutoring session.
