What is your teaching philosophy?

When teaching a language, I think most of us learn better emotionally, rather than logically. Therefore, I try to make learning fun! I also understand that it is important to learn how a student learns best and cater to their individual learning style and needs.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I might introduce myself, evaluate the goals of the student, and learn about the student's learning style.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by giving that student the tools and techniques they need to study efficiently and effectively.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would continue to ask the student about his or her long and short term goals, and I would keep the classes fun!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to explain the concept with a different approach. For example, drawing out a picture or diagram instead of explaining orally.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I encourage students to focus on details of each specific question and finding those keywords within the text.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategies I have found to be most successful are having variety within each class, and using games and the student's interests to teach a subject.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find a way to relate the subject to something that interests the student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

One technique that I love is having the student teach the material back to me. It's a great way to review and lets me know if the student understood the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence by encouraging the student when they improve or answer a question correctly. I always look for the positive, rather than focusing on mistakes.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

First, I ask the student what his or her goals are. Next, I might use an open-ended writing prompt or a few math questions to evaluate the student's level. Furthermore, I ask about the student's study habits.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Everyone learns differently. Some people are visual learners, others auditory, and others kinesthetic. I try to evaluate how my students learn best so I can cater my classes to their individual learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use textbooks, notebooks, and online resources, such as online games and online articles. Sometimes I bring in board games or other fun materials to my classes.
