Hi there! My name is Popi and I am an educator working at the Santa Barbara Zoo. I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley after studying environmental science and minoring in math and science education. For over 7 years, I've been working and volunteering in various elementary schools, science museums, summer camps, and tutoring jobs. I have the most experience teaching math and English writing/reading to elementary and middle school students, but I have also tutored high school math, AP prep, and SAT prep in one-on-one settings. A good education has been the biggest and best opportunity awarded to me, and I know that your education makes a huge difference to your future. With this in mind, I strive to share a passion for learning and an open mind to young students in order to give them a chance to change their futures like I have changed mine. In my days off, I watch Disney movies, cuddle with animals, and rock climb!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to establish an understanding of what my students know by giving them practice problems or having them explain the concepts that they're learning to me. This way, I get to see how far they are and what areas they need help on so I can tailor my lessons to their needs.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I practice good study skills and time organization with my students during our lessons together so that they're able to work and learn independently when the tutoring lessons are over.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I introduce concepts in a variety of ways to ensure my students get a complete understanding of what they're being taught. I also try to relate the lessons to their own interests/hobbies. To make sure my students actually understand what I've taught, I ask them to re-explain the material in their own words back to me. This way, I know that my lessons are making sense.
