I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Honey

Certified Tutor

I am an attorney who graduated at the top of my class and an editor of my school's law review. I was also the Mayor of the town in which I was previously living. I am an avid photographer, a certified yoga teacher and a lover of all things French. I've lived in both Israel and France for several years each. I've also traveled much of the world and love new adventures.

I've been told that I have a knack for teaching and that I can explain difficult concepts in a simple way allowing the student to move from the basic to the more complex in a systematic fashion. I prefer the Socratic Method where possible - I like to ask the questions that will lead the student to discover the answer by him/herself. Watching the light bulb go off gives me a sense of great satisfaction and joy.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would give the student assignments to be completed on his own and then reviewed by me. I would ask the student to devise a lesson plan for me on a topic with which he is having problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would give lots of positive feedback, beginning with exercises the student can master fairly easily, and progressing to more advanced exercises slowly. I would give reading assignments on topics of interest to the student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to explain the concept verbally and in writing, and ask the student to do research and teach me the concept.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use exercise books, internet-based videos, news and other topical magazines. For young children, I use actual objects.
