Hi everyone! My name is Justin and I'm excited for the opportunity to be your tutor. Tutoring is something I have always loved to do, and I plan to become a college professor someday. Helping others achieve their goals is something I truly strive to do as much as possible, and there is no better way to do this than through tutoring.
I recently graduated from Georgetown University (Summa Cum Laude) with a B.S. in Human Science and a minor in Music. This Fall, I will be starting a Masters program in Music History at the Hartt School of Music. Throughout college, I took multiple upper-level courses in the basic sciences and music, and would be capable of tutoring in these fields. My strongest subjects are music history/theory and anatomy/physiology, although I also have a lot of tutoring experience in general chemistry. All of the students who I tutored during college saw improvements in their grades and test scores with my tutoring.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that teaching is truly about bringing a deep understanding of the material to the student. When I teach or tutor, I take the material step-by-step at the student's pace to ensure that they fully understand and internalize all material before moving on to what's next.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I will introduce myself and spend some time getting to know the student personally. I will ask the student about the format of their course, and about what types of problems/questions they are working on. I will ask if they know what tutoring strategies have been beneficial in the past, or if they have any suggestions for me to be a better tutor for them specifically.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by giving them the knowledge and confidence that they need to succeed. Instilling confidence is one of the most important aspects of tutoring, and is something I try to do in each of my tutoring sessions.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
The best way to keep a student motivated, in my mind, is to keep the material interesting. I would help to draw connections between the material and the student's life, so that they can see its relevance and importance to them.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has difficulty with a concept, I will slow everything down and walk through the concept step-by-step, taking as much time as necessary with each step to ensure that the student has a complete understanding.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would help these students by giving them the tips they need to succeed with reading comprehension. I would read the passage along with them, and explain what aspects of it are relevant to their studies, as well as asking pertinent questions to ensure that the student understood the material.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found that it is best to speak with the student at their own level, and not expect them to have any sort of mastery of the material.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would help a student become engaged by showing them the relevance of this subject to their life. For example, I could turn ordinary math/science problems into scenarios that are directly applicable to the student's life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Once I feel that the student has mastered some material, I would give them a short review quiz, either verbal or written, to ensure their mastery of the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would build a student's confidence in a subject by encouraging them to do problems on their own once they have mastered the subject. If they are able to do a problem on their own without my help, they will become more confident in the material.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I would evaluate a student's needs by going through some questions/problems with them to assess their level of mastery of the subject.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
First, I would ask the student if there are any particular tutoring strategies that they know work well or poorly for them, and I would adapt my tutoring style to fit their needs. In the first tutoring session, I would try a number of tutoring strategies to get a feel for what works best for that individual student.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I like to keep the tutoring session as interesting as possible, so I will frequently use images, PowerPoints, and other visual sources to reinforce the material. I also like to use the resources available on the internet to reinforce learning.
