Kim: Pflugerville tutor

Certified Tutor

I graduated magna cum laude from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. I majored in criminology and minored in psychology and middle eastern studies. I eventually want to go back to school to get my masters in education or counseling. I currently work at a charter school in Washington, DC as a fifth grade teacher. I am available to tutor elementary and middle school students. My favorite subject to teach is math. I really enjoy working with my students on a challenging problem and watching them persevere. I believe everyone can master grade level content it is just about finding a strategy that works for you. This is why I believe tutoring can be so beneficial for a student who is struggling learning a concept when it is taught one way. I usually like to have the student teach me how to do the problem in order for me to find where they are struggling. Outside of school and tutoring I enjoy playing/coaching lacrosse and field hockey. I also like to take hikes with my dog, try new restaurants and go shopping.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe all students should have the right to a proper education. Students should receive both an academic and social curriculum to allow them to become a successful adult.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student - favorite and least favorite subject in school, what they like to do out of school, and what kind of books do they like to read... Also learn what type of learner they are through some games or little quizzes to better assist them one on one.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Give the student problem solving strategies for what to do when they are stuck. Provide them with creative ways to teach the material so they become invested in their learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By giving the student praise on his/her successes and letting he/she know when he/she is making growth. Also reinforcing that not all skills come easily - it takes practice.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I break down the skill for the student in small chunks/steps. I also research different ways to present the information or different strategies to solve the problem to find what works for that student.
