I graduated with my Master's in English Education in 2013, and I am currently a 6th and 7th grade Humanities teacher working in the New York City public school system. I've had the opportunity to work with a wide range of students - from those in gifted and talented programs to English Language Learners to students with special needs - in their journey to becoming great readers and writers! While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about cultivating strong literacy skills and a love of reading in all my students. I've found that discovering what books interest my students can give me wonderful insight into who they are and who they are becoming. I am committed to and passionate about literacy, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading that which enriches my life, running, trying out new restaurants with friends, going to the movies and exploring new neighborhoods in the five boroughs.

Learning is a collaborative effort and I work with my students to guarantee my lessons meet their needs and expectations. I believe anyone can succeed in math, it is a matter of finding a way to relate to the material. I have a broad background - with degrees in engineering and liberal arts - and will work with you to relate material to your strengths and interests. My professional background is in aerospace engineering and software development, where I applied math to real world problems on a daily basis. I look forward to helping you whether you are struggling to grasp basic concepts or want to deepen your understanding of theory and application.I am enthusiastic about learning. I break complicated material down into digestible components, I have good study skills, and my interdisciplinary background allows me to relate disparate material to subjects in which students are strongest.

Growing up, I struggled in math. I remember being so nervous when I walked into a math class because I knew I would leave feeling unsure. I never want anyone else to feel that way. After graduation from the University of Central Florida, where I majored in Political Science and International Relations, I began serving with Americorps in the classroom.During my two years of service I taught, you guessed it: MATH. I taught 9th grade Algebra 1. What I realized during this time is that I actually love math. I also learned that sometimes when something comes to us easily, we don't know how to share that knowledge to someone else in a way that is beneficial to them. Because Math did not come to me naturally growing up, I have taught myself and my students in a very specific way. My method of help is simple: I am going to teach you math in the way that makes the most sense to you! I make sure not to overwhelm my students and help understand the "why" behind an answer. I will break down problems to the basics so it is digestable and so you can process the information best. All of the students I have tutored 1:1 have gone on to pass the Algebra 1 EOC Exam, which I attribute to the learning process that takes place in our sessions.

Educating children, showing them the way to be successful and addressing their needs has been my wish since my early high school years. That???s why I have chose to become an undergraduate student of Physics education department at Middle East Technical University. The extensive study program and busy academic life at METU, where I held high academic achievement, gave me the knowledge and skills necessary to become a good teacher. Throughout my academic years, I tried to stay focused on my studies and master my subject. The courses offered at the education department provided me with the opportunities to develop teaching materials, use instructional methods and manage and guide a classroom. Moreover, I was involved in projects where we made lesson plans and developed high school physics curriculum. I had the chance to demonstrate my knowledge during my teaching practice years at METU High school and I was very satisfied to see that my students were making progress.Besides my educational background, I have five years of work experience. I worked in four different schools in three different countries. Those years ripened me and made me experienced in teaching. I had the opportunity to deal with twenty five students in one classroom and give them extra lessons to back up the things covered. On the other hand, I worked with as few as five students in one classroom when I was preparing students for a national examination. I also held good communication with students and tried to help them with special needs. The expectation of parents was really high, since most of the schools I worked were private schools. Therefore, I had to provide parents with information about their child???s progress where I improved my communication skills with parents. Besides all these duties, some of my responsibilities were attending education and staff meetings and conferences, dealing with students??? problems and organizing social activities for students.I believe that I can maintain a good relationship with students simply because I am very adaptable. I studied in a foreign country and I have traveled to a lot of places. I have friends from all over the world and I still keep in touch with them. Having dealt with students with different personalities I believe that I can be a good friend to them. Although teaching is my major area of interest, I spend my spare time doing social activities and sports. I am fond of playing table tennis. In addition to all these, I am also interested in cooking and traveling. I believe that I can combine my personal interests with those of a student to better address his/her needs.

I received my BA in History, English Literature and Russian Language Studies from the University of Iowa in 2007 and my PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in May of 2015 in Modern European History. I have a strong background in general European history, and have taught a variety of courses at the college level, including, but not limited to, European History, U.S. History to 1865, U.S. History from 1865 to the present, the History of Russia and the Soviet Union and general historical writing courses. As such I have extensive experience working with students both one on one and in lecture settings. As a tutor, I am not only responsible for conveying material, but also for identifying where students struggling. It is my goal that my students engage with texts more completely, develop their own opinions about historical events, and learn to question historical authors and their motivations. I also feel that it is important for all students to develop strong writing skills, no matter what their future holds. This applies not only to history courses, but other subjects as well. The ability to write in a cogent, succinct, and simple manner is applicable across all subjects and disciplines, and more than any other, this is the skill that I hope my students accomplish through working with me as their tutor. As a result of my studies and teaching experience, I have a strong background in American, British, and Russian Literature. In the past five years I have lived abroad in England, Latvia, and Russia, and have extensive experience in the Russian language, which I have studied for 10 years. I also have conversational knowledge of both Latvian and Polish. In my free time I appreciate a good book or film, and enjoy sewing.I find working with students to be not only incredibly fulfilling, but helping students obtain the skills and confidence that is necessary to achieve their goals is truly amazing, and the most motivating factor for me as a teacher and tutor.
