What is your teaching philosophy?

I want to help students understand subjects that don't come easy by engaging them in a positive manner and showing new ways to approach problems.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and help make the student feel comfortable by having them ask me questions. We will start by addressing problems they are having with their subjects.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will help a student become an independent learner by building up their confidence to solve problems with every session until they can solve problems without my assistance.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will try to engage students in new ways to help them understand the problems presented to them and present the information in different ways.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would teach them basics of the concept to build up their foundation so they can work up to tougher problems.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would tell students to slow down and read each question carefully and extract key concepts of the question.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I try to show the student how to set one problem first and explain them through the process and then we work through similar problems.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would explain to a student the importance of the subject in their future coursework and help them work through their immediate obstacles.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

We will continue to work through problems together and then test them to see how far they've advanced in their learning.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would have a student try to explain the problem to me and then we will work through the problem based on how the student sees fit and then address any issues along the way.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I will talk to a student upfront and see where they are struggling with the material, and work to build their problem solving skills.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I will stay open minded and listen to what a student is struggling with and tackle the issue from a different angle to find the underlying issue with the student and the material and work up from there.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use practice problems and sample questions to keep the student engaged and willing to try new problems.
