Jimmy: Bristol tutor

Certified Tutor

My educational background is in the physical science and engineering. I have degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from UCLA and Columbia University and did my graduate research on thin-film semiconductor materials science. In addition to science and engineering, I am also very interested in problem solving - techniques, methods, as well as ways of teaching it.

My teaching experience consists of Teaching Assitantships at universities and private tutoring at the undergraduate level. I have led discussion sessions for undergraduate engineering courses, tutored writing and math courses. My favorite subjects to teach include Mathematics and Materials Science.

I believe that effective tutoring requires effort and communication from both the tutor and the student. It is important to establish goals at the beginning and strive towards them. As a tutor, my job is to help my students achieve their goals and become successful at whatever subjects they seek help in.

In my spare time, I enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling and running, reading and writing fiction, learning math and science, and traveling.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I think that everyone learns differently and have different needs. It is important to be adaptable and teach in a way that is best for the student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with a student, I would go over their goals, strengths, weaknesses, as well as the syllabus for the course.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would guide students with their work (whether it is solving math problems or reading comprehension) and then gradually let them independently solve problems until they feel comfortable on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I think trust is important. It is important for the student to believe in the tutor, as it is also important for the tutor to believe in the student. As a tutor, I will encourage the student and show them the progress that they are making to establish this trust.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

There are often multiple ways to teach a concept. Certain students prefer certain methods. I will try to explain it in a way that works for them.
