I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I tutor from home usually, but you never know when I might be in cali or Iowa or Ireland. But I make sure to match your schedule the best I can! I'm always happy to share cool travel stories.

Just graduated college with honors in Chem and Math. Now an online tutor. The flexible schedule means I can travel and have waaaaaay more awesome hobbies than any one man should be allowed to have, basically Indiana Jones! If Indy were a barefoot chemist, and also a future carny... Anyway I really enjoy nerding out about science and science-like things, green/nuclear energy(!!!), videogames, politics, or fantasy. I read a looooot of fantasy and sci-fi!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Give me a minute, I'm bad with names... Oh you mean THAT reaction! It works like this, get it? No? How about we draw it?

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student, and see roughly what they will want to cover over the coming weeks.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Show them where I go to find my answers, and how to read textbooks effectively.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Be positive and available to help before things get too frustrating.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Skip it and try different but perhaps related material, and then come back to it with fresh eyes later and often. Attempt to make connections with other concepts the student understands better.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Tell them to slow down and read the question carefully, and attempt to understand some words by context.
