Certified Tutor

The journey of discovering, rediscovering, inventing and reinventing myself has begun.
I am a rising freshmen at Rutgers University-Camden, majoring in Finance but intensely passionate about all branches of Mathematics. After graduating from high school from India, I started attending Rutgers that has been a major boost to my career path. I am proud to say that I have perfect grades, which means I have a 4.0 GPA until now. I have a top 5% rank in all my classes, and a valedictorian in most of my courses. Deemed responsible, hardworking and ambitious by all my professors, I have received great recommendations from them.

I have been tutoring Mathematics to my peers and juniors ever since high school. I am confident that I am a good tutor, since my friends always come to me for help in Algebra, PreCalc and Calculus since they regard my teaching style as easy and interesting. However, I would like to add that I am a pusher- I push myself to the best I can be, and I would push and motivate my students to be their best too.

Outside academics, I have a lot of hobbies. I watch TED talks, write computer programs, listen to music and read. I also love roller-skating and ice-skating. I am also passionate about community service and I receive a scholarship from my college for my community service engagement.

I would like to believe that I am not afraid to dream big and work towards it fearlessly. If youre looking for somebody who loves what she does and does what she loves, I am a perfect fit.

What is your teaching philosophy?

The philosophy that drives me is to be passionate about what I learn. Hence, my teaching philosophy professes that I must inculcate the passion and excitement for the subject in my student through interactive learning. If you have a doubt, ask me until it's crystal clear!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student's strengths and weaknesses, a fair idea of his/her knowledge, and the target or goal he/she wants to reach and in what time span.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Through helping the student fully understand the basic concepts and allowing plenty of room for practice and questions. Once the student gets the hang of it, he/she can become an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Practice, practice and practice! You will see the difference in your work when your thoughts are smoothly translated into work through thorough understanding, and grades will automatically rise which, I believe, is a huge motivation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Go through the concept step-by-step, probably through interaction by allowing the student to ask himself questions and encouraging them to find their own answers just with a little hint or push!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Students with struggles in reading comprehension should try reading simple and engaging stories, while taking notice of new words and expressions. As a child, I used to have a notebook where I noted down new words, and I regard that habit as the reason for my strong literary skills.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

First, start with the basics. I never assume that my student knows what I think is "basic foundation." I have discovered that when a student understands the simplest concepts, they naturally proceed to understand the next concepts since they feel a "spark of intelligence" in them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I believe in the philosophy that every subject is like a relationship: you get love and appreciation only when you love the subject. Interaction and encouraging self-discovery through implicit guidance can help engage and excite the students.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would cross-question, first on the same problem and then test them with a different problem of the same type. The next step would be to slightly change the problem and test if the student can solve it. Last but not least, I would encourage the student to ask follow-up questions.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Like I always say, through 'practice, practice and practice.' Remember, I would always be there to mentor you, but your confidence will only be built when you see your hard work bear fruit.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Primarily, ask them. Secondarily, evaluate their needs through series problems that will help me identity the concepts or ideas that the student needs to know.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I am completely adaptable and appreciative of change. If the student needs extra help beyond the scope of the syllabus, I will teach it to them through increased sessions.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Textbooks, videos, and most importantly, my own concepts. I completely trust my base concepts, and I will be glad to teach them to my students since they have made my concepts really clear through effective technique styles.
