I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I'm currently a first year medical student at Indiana University School of Medicine. I graduated from Indiana University in 2012 with a Bachelors of Science in neuroscience and minors in sociology and psychology. Between my undergraduate career and medical school, I did research in brain sciences at the University of Iowa and worked as an EMT. In my free time, I enjoy boxing, volunteering, and spending time with my family.

Prior to medical school, I worked for several years for a test preparation company teaching and tutoring the SAT. My tutoring strategies are tailored to each student and subject, but often involve building the student's confidence through practice questions and test-taking strategies. Going into a test feeling confident can make a world of difference! I love seeing my student's hard work pay off.

My schedule in the summer is quite flexible, so I'm willing and able to work around the student's needs. If you would like your tutoring to go beyond August, please be aware that my schedule will become more restricted at that time.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Passive learning isn't great for retention or improving test scores. It's easy to feel like you "got the gist of things" when you skim your homework or textbook, but then when you're presented with questions on the test, you might feel uncertain or flustered. So, don't wait until the test to be presented with questions! Let's do some practice questions/quizzes now.
