Certified Tutor
I am a high school math teacher, leading Algebra 1, Statistics, and College Algebra courses. I have a dual degree in math and subject-matter education with a minor in Statistics and Operations Research, as well as a concentration in Honors studies. I have had much previous experience in the tutoring field in my hometown and at my university, and I am a Level 1 Certified Tutor from the College Reading and Learning Association. My favorite thing about tutoring is being able to work with a student individually to enhance his or her knowledge of the subject matter, and that "AHA" moment is the best!

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to provide the student with enough information and understanding of a subject that, eventually, he or she won't need me anymore; that's how I will know that I was successful!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
At the first session with a student, I definitely want to get to know him or her! Being a good tutor involves knowing a student's likes and dislikes so I can better tailor my sessions. In addition, I would go over with the student exactly what is to be accomplished through the tutoring sessions so we can establish a plan to cover all the information.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Instead of just teaching students how to do one specific problem, it's imperative for the student to understand how to apply past lessons to current ones. In addition, teaching students study tips and how to take better notes in class will help them to become an independent learner.
