Certified Tutor
I have a PhD. degree in organic chemistry and seven years of teaching experience at a prestigious university. My classes have averaged one-hundred undergraduate and graduate students each semester and I have received outstanding student evaluations.
Over the years, I have dedicated my time to research, teaching, developing courses and educational materials at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. My teaching specialization centers on organic chemistry, spectroscopy and medicinal chemistry in drug design. I also established an independent research group in drug discovery. In addition, I have guided students and published research papers with them.
As a professor in organic chemistry, I am familiar with the difficulties students have with this subject and endeavor to help them feel comfortable and confident so that they successfully achieve their goals.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching and research are closely related. Research brings new knowledge that contributes to course content. Teaching students at all levels raises questions that challenge existing approaches and understanding. These questions, in turn, can bring new insights that drive research. I believe a good instructor should always look for ways to improve their teaching skills and set goals that are both challenging and achievable to the students. As a teacher, it is important for me to make each student realize his/her true potential, and attain the highest goal possible by setting the highest standards for himself/herself. In addition, it is also important to encourage students to learn from their mistakes. Learning what doesn't work is just as important as learning what does. Students learn more from understanding why an incorrect answer is wrong than from simply memorizing the correct answer.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I give a simple quiz to determine their basic knowledge of chemistry.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By giving them guidelines to follow and allow them to work through the solution/s independently.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I like to assist in selecting a chemistry topic that they enjoy, and then interject information / questions regarding topics they may not enjoy, but need to understand to move forward.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I determine the problem and then modify my approach to guide them.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I break down the concepts in smaller pieces.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Integrate science into real-life application / solutions.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
By evaluating their understanding of the concepts using questions directed at specific elements of the topic.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By working closely with them and ensuring that they understand the material thoroughly.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By questioning them and provided quizzes on the key concepts of the topic.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I evaluate their goals and requirements and adapt the lessons from there.
