It's okay to make mistakes. The best students learn from their mistakes. Those that do not are destined to repeat them.

Have the student take a diagnostic test or assignment prior to the session. During the first session, answers will be reviewed and explained. Then a plan based upon strengths and weaknesses will be made for future sessions.

By ensuring that the student learns and appreciates self-discipline. Students that practice and study on their own will eventually learn discipline.

By allowing them to make and accept mistakes. Their academic future does not depend on a getting a perfect score on the first try. Instead, realistic goals and settings will be made with the student's consent.

Asking them what they know and do not know. Their knowledge will provide a foundation by which a lesson can be given. Then a simple, step-by-step explanation will be provided. To review and ensure retention, the student will then be asked to teach the skill or the concept to the tutor acting as the student.

Practice. Practice. Practice. The best way to improve reading skills is to do just that. Read every day. Reading parts of a book, scholarly articles, or anything that interests them every day helps. Any vocabulary that is foreign should be written down in an index card or journal and then looked up and reviewed.

Building a connection and establishing realistic goals. Students will only learn if they are interested. Friendship is not a requirement, but being sincere, honest, and kind is. And a shared set of goals will keep both parties accountable and motivated.

By attempting to show how that subject can be applied to their life. Students tend to struggle with subjects that intimidate or cause fear in them. We usually fear what we do not connect to understand. So, building a connection to the subject matter can help to better engage them.

Focus on what you do not know then on what you do know. Make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes. And then review those mistakes. Repeat until there is no knowledge that needs to be focused on.

By first ensuring that the student is comfortable with who they are. The wisest people are fully aware of what they do and do not know. Then, students can focus more on the subject and less on being intimidated by it.

By establishing a list of strengths and weaknesses from diagnostic assessments. Sometimes new needs or areas of weakness may arise during sessions. It is important to take the time to be flexible and go over these weaknesses in addition to following the initial list.

Every student is different. Every student has their own strengths in learning style. It is important to be able to apply a set of techniques to all students. Yet it is equally, if not more, important to find and apply new ways based upon their learning style. So flexibility is a must.

Review books and guides that the student is comfortable with. A student should also be challenged, so review guides that are stages higher than the learning level will also be used.
