My philosophy on education has always been to help my students personally, socially, and academically. I believe reaching out to the student in these three core areas will help to maximize student motivation, engagement and achievement. I have always enjoyed helping students academically. I have always loved helping students personally and socially. A school counselor is a career in which I am lucky enough to do all three. As a current school counselor for the past seven years, I have had the opportunity to put this philosophy into action and am looking forward to doing so for many years to come.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy on education has always been to help my students personally, socially, and academically. I believe reaching out to the student in these three core areas will help to maximize student motivation, engagement and achievement.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know my student on a personal level, interests, likes, dislikes, learning style. I will then create customized lessons from there. I am also open to helping with any assignments.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching students skills for organization, listening skills, memory techniques, and how to break down assignments can help them become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I always use praise and show students their positive results.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty with a concept, I would break down the skill and/or concept by doing things one at a time.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I am a believer in using the highlighting tool, chunking reading, and breaking down paragraphs to help reading comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that getting to know students personally first has helped to break the ice and get to know the student’s goals and wishes.
