I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Sarah

Certified Tutor

I have been a tutor for over five years. During that time I have worked with students from the age of 6 through adults. I was born and raised in France, lived 10 years in Israel where a earned my Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences. I am working toward a Master degree in Nursing Studies. I am passionate about languages and sciences and hope to help you with these subjects. In the past I have tutored in French, Hebrew, and many science subjects (biology, biochemistry, anatomy, organic chemistry, etc). Sometimes a subject can appear intimidating, but by learning new way to understand it or perhaps a different angle, you will be able to approach the subject more easily and achieve success! One of the main reasons why I enjoy tutoring is the light of my student's eye when they finally understand a concept they could not grasp before.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that each one of us has our own way of remembering and learning material. Whether students are visual, audial, verbal or logical learners, I will find the best way to pass on the material.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find out exactly what they are having difficulty with and begin experimenting with different modalities to find the best way to help them understand the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Assist them in developing study techniques that meet their learning style, and then give them assignments in between sessions to be sure they are implementing the new techniques.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break the concept down in to smaller pieces so they can look at each component before putting it together into a larger concept. I also might try to find another way of explaining the concept in a way they can relate to (i.e. a metaphor for something they particularly enjoy).

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would have them do things like reading out loud, highlighting key words, reading a second time, and ask them what they have learned from what they just read. Based on their answer I might then suggest creating flashcards or writing notes as another way to solidify the material.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Relate it to something they are already excited about (i.e. sports, music, arts, etc.). Also by explaining how the subject is so relevant to their lives already.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Asking them questions about the material at the end of a session, or the following session. Perhaps asking them to write a brief summary of what we learned that particular day at the end of a session.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By reviewing every few sessions so they can see how much they have learned.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking many questions to both figure out why they are struggling and what type of learning modalities are most effective for them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By using visual, audial, or logical techniques based on what works best for that student. I also use metaphors that are meaningful to that particular student.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Depending on the student’s needs and the subject, I may use highlighters, flashcards, note paper, books, a tablet if the student has, the internet, different colored pens, etc.
