Certified Tutor

Hey there,

I am a recent graduate from the University at Buffalo receiving my bachelors in biological sciences. I have been tutoring for the past 13 years since I was a freshman in High School. My passion in life is sharing knowledge with the people around me. I hope to obtain my PhD in a few years in genetics. The human genome is a vast ocean of enigmas and finding out what precisely does what can help make great strides with future healthcare.

Currently I tutor in Algebra 1 and 2, and of course Biology. With me as a tutor I hope to connect with my students about how easy the work can become with a little practice. Not all students are the same and thankfully there are many ways I can help the students excel with a little hard work. One of the greatest feelings I get is when you explain the subject to a student and they have this look of "I get it". It just shows the passion one puts into the work he or she does.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To share a personal experience with a student so they can see how it all works together. Sometimes just saying it doesn't get the full effect of actually seeing it in person.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session I would like to know my student a little bit to see what type of teaching style works for them. Once I gauge on how it should be done I work with them till we can get our work done together

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

With a few tips and tricks I have used since high school, hopefully I can give them the necessary know-how of what to look for when studying for an exam.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try and find a solution that would work with them. Not everyone is the same and we all learn from different experiences in our life.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Word association games like Pictionary or 20 questions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Every time we get to a new portion of a question and it looks like they are starting to struggle, it is time to do some drills. Practicing with quick and easy drills help the students associate what they need to do faster.
